In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation is a treatment for infertility problems which helps people have a baby. In this process an egg from the woman's ovaries is taken and fertilised with a man's sperm in a laboratory. After fertilising the egg which is called an embryo, it is put back into the mum's womb for the baby to develop.

This treatment's success rate depends on various things, such as the patient's age and medical issues. Before starting the process, the patient and her partner will need to go through a few screenings which include:

Ovarian reserve testing (the quality and quantity of the eggs), semen analysis, infectious disease screening, uterus exam (the examination of interior of the uterus before starting the IVF treatment).

IVF includes a few steps which are; ovarian stimulation (administration of hormones to stimulate egg production), egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilisation and embryo transfer. One cycle of IVF approximately takes 2-3 weeks, however sometimes more than one cycle needs to be applied.
